Benefits of community solar in New Jersey

Community solar development in New Jersey is a way for electric utility customers, who cannot install solar panels on their own property, to enjoy cost savings from solar energy while reducing their carbon footprint. For residents, businesses, or other organizations who are unable to put solar on their roof for any reason – whether they are renters, have a shaded rood, cannot afford the cost, or have other constraints – subscription to a community solar installation located off-site on a commercial rooftop, landfill, or parking lot canopy, allows them to participate in both the environment and cost-saving benefits of solar energy. Community solar projects benefit the community in several ways:

A New Jersey Community Solar Developer and Installer, like Pfister Energy, will develop, install, and maintain the community solar project. Our team will also work with businesses and the community to lease available space, providing valuable revenue streams and additional cost-saving benefits.

BENEFITS FOR BUILDING OWNERS, MANAGERS, and BUSINESSES

Building owners, or managers, with unused rooftop or property space (including parking lots and carport canopies) can benefit from community solar projects. Utilizing these spaces can generate revenue for your business or building when you enter into a lease agreement for a community solar project.

HOW TO CHOOSE A SITE FOR COMMUNITY SOLAR

  • The site selected for a New Jersey Community Solar project can impact the cost of building the project and the offering made to subscribers. Cost and generation abilities of any site depend on site conditions, but on average 5 acres of panels can host PV panels representing approximately 1 MW of solar (which would serve 100-200 households).

  • Community solar can be located on many types of sites, including private or public land (brownfields, closed landfills), public buildings, commercial rooftops (warehouses, manufacturing facilities), affordable multifamily housing, buildings owned by nonprofit organizations and churches, and other sites. The solar installation must be located in the same electric utility service territory as the subscribers.

  • Each utility must have enough hosting capacity at the site to accept incoming electrical current, and each utility must have infrastructure in place in the area of the solar project to connect the solar system to the grid.
  • Pfister Energy, a New Jersey community solar developer, when creating a community solar project, will ensure that the site chosen meets all required criteria to ensure the project’s success.

WHAT IS THE NEW JERSEY COMMUNITY SOLAR PROGRAM?

The New Jersey Community Solar Program (CSEP – Community Solar Energy Program) began as a Pilot Program in 2018.

  • New Jersey’s Community Solar Energy Program allows those who rent, lack control of their roof, live in a multi-family building, do not have property suitable for solar, or cannot afford the cost of a solar installation to benefit from the cost savings and access to clean energy through solar power.
  • All community solar projects are to serve a minimum of 51 percent low and moderate income (LMI) subscribers, as measured by capacity subscribed.
  • The permanent CSEP will permit community solar projects of no greater than 5 MW on rooftops, carports and canopies over impervious surfaces, contaminated sites and landfills, and certain bodies of water such as water treatment reservoirs and dredge ponds.
  • New projects will be sited in all four major utility service territories, and the program will support enough community solar projects to enroll about 30,000 New Jersey subscribers.
