Project Engineer

About the role

The Project Engineer is responsible for designing code-compliant commercial solar photovoltaic systems (Rooftop, Ground Mount, and Carport PV Systems) following the Pfister Energy engineering department policy. Developing an understanding of Solar and Electrical engineering concepts and calculations is a necessity for this position. This is a fast paced yet detail-oriented position.

Core responsibilities include preparing plan sets in Helioscope and AutoCAD for photovoltaic system installations while working with the various departments including Sales, Operations, and Estimating Departments. This person will also provide professional site auditing services to obtain and communicate the necessary technical data to the Estimating and Engineering team for the preparation of project scope information needed to adequately propose a solar system design, as well as provide permit ready documents needed to facilitate the installation of solar systems.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Draft and design projects in Helioscope and AutoCAD by utilizing space available, understanding electrical load requirements, and running shading analysis.
  • Produce PV/Energy Storage System installation details, panel count, attachment methods with layouts.
  • Adhere to pv system design criteria including structural, electrical, equipment, and installation parameters.
  • Comply with local and national code requirements in project jurisdictions.
  • Communicate with the Manager to understand any changes in permitting requirements.
  • Communicate with Management, Permitting and Engineering team members to resolve any issues.
  • Design and specify electrical system details including conductor, conduit and overcurrent protection sizing, calculation and mitigation of voltage drop, single lines and connection diagrams.
  • Assures that the design/drafting timelines are met and on schedule.
  • Coordinates and cooperates with Estimating Manager to ensure the smooth flow of all information necessary for the completion of the overall project design/drafting effort.
  • Looks for and suggests improvements in assigned project areas.
  • Occasional travel to project sites to obtain information necessary to complete technical design documents for a solar system and use internal software to communicate project details with pictures and standard forms.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures for Site Audit to ensure a smooth handoff between departments.
  • Create detailed rooftop map layout for solar arrays including roof layout dimensions and all roof penetrations (pipes, vents etc.).
  • Develop a positive relationship with customers to establish rapport and to gather facilities assessment data as needed.
  • Provide and maintain a current driver’s license and a clean driving record to safely operate a company vehicle.
  • Develop relationships with sales team, design professionals and subcontractors to support the business activities.
  • Manage outside engineering consultants, reviewing, and approving their work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to effectively communicate with engineering, construction, and customer facing teams.
  • Proficiency in drafting using AutoCAD, Helioscope, and knowledge of NEC.
  • Excellent computing skills.
  • Strong desire to learn and grow in design/engineering field.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in PV Engineering.
