About the Role

The Sr. Director of Self-Perform Construction will be responsible for leading and managing the company’s self-perform construction teams across multiple solar energy projects. This role will ensure optimal efficiency, safety, quality, and profitability while building an engaged, high-performing workforce. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in managing construction crews directly, prioritizing safety, and driving operational excellence. This position will focus on fostering in-house talent, coordinating across departments, and to project execution in collaboration with the Project Management team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Team Development and Leadership
    • Attract, interview, hire, and retain top performers, ensuring all self-perform team members align with the company’s values and goals.
    • Review and manage individual and team performance, providing mentorship and feedback to optimize talent
  • Project Execution and Leadership
    • Provide leadership, motivating and guiding the self-perform Construction Managers, Foreman and crews to meet project objectives, deadlines, and safety standards.
    • Collaborate with Project Managers to create and maintain detailed project schedules, including 4-week lookahead schedules to balance resources and drive timely completion.
    • Troubleshoot design challenges and develop solutions for issues encountered during construction to minimize downtime and rework.
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Lead and enforce the company’s safety policies and OSHA standards, ensuring a culture of safety across all job sites.
    • Conduct regular site inspections to identify non-compliance and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly
  • Quality Management
    • Implement and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS) across all projects to meet or exceed company standards.
    • Identify patterns of rework and develop strategies to eliminate recurring issues, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Labor Strategy and Coordination
    • Manage labor strategies to maximize efficiency across regions, balancing workloads, fulfilling apprenticeship requirements and optimizing crew sizes.
    • Coordinate with labor suppliers as needed to maintain effective communication and improve labor performance
  • Budget Management and Cost Control
    • Oversee construction costs, tracking expenditures related to labor, materials, and equipment to ensure project profitability.
    • Develop and implement cost controls to meet or exceed project budgets without sacrificing safety or quality.
    • Develop and implement labor productivity tracking methodologies
  • Cross-functional Collaboration and Reporting
    • Collaborate with Project Managers to provide regular updates on project progress, financial forecasting, and regional performance.
    • Contribute to project estimating processes throughout the project lifecycle to support operational planning and budgeting.
  • Team Communication and Problem Solving
    • Utilize daily huddles to resolve issues, promote communication, and encourage collaboration across self-perform teams.
    • Provide training to Construction Managers, foreman & crews on project planning, productivity, and quality workmanship, ensuring that projects are executed profitably and efficiently.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience
    • 10+ years of experience in the construction industry, including significant experience managing self-perform teams across multiple projects, with an emphasis on electrical and solar.
    • Proven experience managing multiple large electrical and/or solar installation crews across multiple states, with a track record of delivering complex projects on aggressive schedules.
    • Prior field management experience and holding a Master Electrical License is a plus
  • Leadership Skills
    • Strong leadership abilities, with experience building and managing high-performing, diverse teams in the field.
    • Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills, with a focus on delivering high-quality results
  • Construction Knowledge
    • Robust understanding of multiple construction disciplines, including electrical, earthwork, utilities, and structural work.
    • Strong familiarity with OSHA safety regulations and quality control standards
  • Software Skills
    • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Procore, Smartsheets and MS Project software
  • Additional Requirements
    • Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
    • This role requires frequent travel between project sites, primarily in the northeast and mid-Atlantic region. Company vehicle will be provided.
